                            A Letter to God

Q.1. Describe the character of Lencho in the light of his faith and attitude towards God and man.

Ans . 

Introduction: Lencho was hardworking farmer. He hoped for a good crop if the corn field got some rains.

His Faith in God: Lencho was told that God sees everything. Lencho had one hope and it was the help of God. So, he wrote a letter to God. His corn was totally destroyed by hailstorm. He needed a hundred pesos to survive.

A Simple Fellow: Lencho did not know world affairs. He was simply a devotee of God.

Q.2. How did the rain change into disaster? How did it affect Lencho's fields?

How did the hailstones affect the field of Lencho?

Ans.

While Lencho was watching the raindrops falling on his field, suddenly a strong wind started blowing and along with the rain, big hailstones started falling. Hail continued to fall for an hour. The field turned white like salt. The crop was completely destroyed. The hail was left nothing.


                        Nelson Mandela 

Q.1. Describe Nelson Mandela.

Ans.

Nelson Mandela was a great leader of South Africa. He was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo(मवेजो), Union of South Africa. He worked as a lawyer in Johannesburg(जोहांसबर्ग). He fought against apartheid and worked for equality and justice. He spent 27 years in prison but never gave up hope. In 1994, he became the first Black President of South Africa. He believed in peace, forgiveness, and unity.

Q.2. What were the difficulties faced by Nelson Mandela in achieving freedom for his people?

Ans.

Nelson Mandela had to face many difficulties to free his countrymen from the rule of apartheid. This great patriot had to sacrifice his home, beloved family and comfort. He was declared an outlaw for demanding equality for all his fellow black Africans and was imprisoned for 27 years. He and his companions were tortured intolerably. He suffered hunger, oppression and injustice but kept the flame of independence burning in his heart. Their courage, struggle and sacrifice bore fruit and South Africa was freed from apartheid rule on May 10, 1994.

Q.3. Who was Nelson Mandela? What ideals does Nelson Mandela set out for the future of South Africa?

Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa. Nelson Mandela sets out the following ideals for the future of South Africa.

(a) Poverty: They will set free their people from continuing bondage of poverty. They will no longer be poor.

(b) Deprivation: Now people have their rightful benefits.

(c) Suffering: They will no longer tolerate the atrocities of the enemy.

(d) Gender and other discrimination: They are now equal. There will be no difference of gender, colour and caste among their people.

Their achievements is glorious. They will preserve their freedom.


               Two Stories about Flying

Q.1. How did the mother 'trick' the young seagull into flying?

Ans. 

The young seagull had not eaten anything for the last twenty-four hours and he was very hungry. When he saw his mother tearing at a peace of fish, begging her to bring him some food. The mother seagull tricked the young seagull into flying by tempting him with food. She flew near him holding a piece of fish in her beak. When the young seagull tried to snatch the fish, she flew slightly away from the cliff. Hungry and desperate, the young seagull jumped after the food and fell into the air. At first he was afraid, but soon his wings spread and he began to fly.

      

         From the Diary of Anne Frank 

Q.1. What does Anne Frank say about her family in her diary?

Ans.

Anne Frank is a young girl of thirteen years, but she is quite intelligent. She writes a diary in which she gives a brief sketch of her family. She says that she has loving parents. Her father is adorable. She has a sixteen-year-old sister. There are about thirty people whom she can call friends. She has loving aunts and a good home too.

Anne talked a lot in the classroom. So, her maths teacher Mr Keesing gave her an essay to wrote on the topic, 'A Chatterbox'. In her essay, Anne wrote a that it was a student's trait to talk . She also wrote that she would never be able to cure herself of this habit because her mother talked as much as she did and she cannot do much about inherited traits. Mr Keesing had a good laugh at Anne's arguments. He enjoyed reading her essay.

Introduction: A Goan village baker has an important place in Goan society.

His Dress: The baker or bread-seller had a peculiar dress known as the kabai. It was a single piece long frock reaching down to the knees.

His Behaviour: The baker made his musical entry on the scene with the ‘jhang-jhang’ sound of his specially made bamboo staff. He would greet the lady of the house with ‘Good morning’. The baker was children’s friend, companion and guide. They bought the bangles from the baker. All were happy with the presence of the baker.

Status and Personality: The baker looked happy and prosperous. He had a jackfruit-like physical appearance.

                                  2. Coorg

Q.1. Give a brief account of the people of Coorg.

Ans.

The people of Coorg are believed to be of Greek or Arab origin. They are brave, independent and proud of their traditions. Coorgis are well known for their hospitality and courage. Many of them serve in the Indian Army and have won bravery awards. They are fond of adventure, hunting and stories of valour. Their culture is rich and they wear traditional dress. They live peacefully in harmony with nature and respect all religions.

                     3. Tea From Assam 

Q.1. Write the two legends about the discovery of tea.

What are the various legends about the origin of tea as described in the lesson 'Glimpses of India's?

Ans.

There are two popular legends about the discovery of tea. According to the first Chinese legend, a Chinese emperor was boiling water when some tea leaves accidentally fell into it. The water changed colour and gave a pleasant smell. The emperor tasted it and found it refreshing. The second legend is about Bodhidharma, an Indian monk. It is believed that tea plants grew from his eyelids, helping monks to stay awake during meditation.
